On Building Confidence in the CFO Role

I often work with emerging businesses where process and documentation are lacking, new informational demands are arising and the executives rely on the CFO as the sole source of information. In these situations, senior staff members can be anxious, fearing the loss of information when the CFO exits.

In one Interim CFO engagement, I was charged with preparing a PPP loan under the CARES Act and for the first financial audit. Historical documentation was inadequate, scattered or non-existent. The CEO regularly visited me, nervously asking where information was stored and how others would access data in the future.

Over the ensuing days, I provided a PPP loan package and all the audit support. I became a forensic accountant locating contracts, supply agreements, triangulating data, contacting bankers, creating debt schedules, equity roll-forwards and so forth. All prepared in digital formats, indexed by subject stored in a departmental file folder.

The CEO was very happy!
