The best part of my experience with my client was how I was able to drive influence over time. This came as a result of trust that had been built through past projects and high-quality results. Eventually, I was treated as a significant member / contributor to the team rather than a support resource to help get work done.
One project that built a trusting relationship centered on providing accurate and actionable financial results for employee stock-based compensation. As part of its IPO readiness process, the organization awarded stock options and restricted stock units to all employees. This made accurate accounting for the costs difficult, given the different award dates, amounts, prices and vesting. Further complicating this was new terms for new employees.
I built an overall stock compensation model that showed proper amortization by month given all the required variables. It showed accrual amount by person, department and business unit, and it accurately accounted for forfeitures and cancellations. This endeavor would not have been possible if we hadn’t built a trusting relationship over time.
